7-20-15 Concorde Battery Announces New Batteries and Certified Installations: Dassault Falcon 7X & CASA 212 Drop In Replacements!

West Covina, CA - Concorde is well known for designing "Drop In Replacements" and is pleased to have developed and certified five new products for 2015.

RG-616 is a 6 Ah, 24 volt auxiliary battery designed for replacement of the original equipment nickel-cadmium battery on the EADS CASA 212. Concorde's CASA 212 STC, ST04178AT, certifies the installation of RG-616 and Concorde's popular RG-380E/40B (38 Ah), RG-380E/44 (42 Ah) or RG-380E/46 (46 Ah) in place of the original equipment main nickel-cadmium battery. Benefits of converting to Concorde's valve regulated sealed lead acid batteries are lower cost of acquisition, reduced cost per flight hour and zero maintenance in addition to the option of upgrading to a higher capacity battery with the RG-380E/44 or RG-380E/46.

RG-CIS25, Concorde's AGM sealed lead acid replacement for Russian part number 20HKEH-25-Y3
(20NKBN-25-U3) has received TSO authorization and FAA PMA certification as the original equipment battery on the PZL Mielec M2805 Skytruck. The RG-CIS25 (24V, 26 Ah) has also become a popular replacement battery for Russian Helicopters' Mi-8 and Mi-17 platforms.

One of Concorde's many heated battery models has been approved for installation on the Dassault 7X using Concorde's RG-390E/KH heated battery assembled with Heater Control Unit HCU-7X with STC ST04185AT. The heated 24V, 28 Ah battery is a drop in replacement for the original equipment battery. Although the conversion does not increase battery capacity or change battery chemistry, Concorde's RG-390ESH/7X is readily available throughout distribution and is a more economical solution than the original equipment sealed lead acid battery.

Also having received TSO authorization in 2015 are Concorde RG-380E/53 battery series (24V, 53 Ah), RG-332 (24V, 44 Ah) and RG-380E/40D (24V, 38 Ah) batteries. Certified installations are in the works to follow in the near future for these new battery offerings.

Concorde sealed lead acid recombinant gas (RG®), absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries are an economical solution to nickel-cadmium batteries with no maintenance requirements and reduced cost per flight hour. Concorde RG® Series do not have a memory and do not require unique charging equipment. Concorde RG® Series batteries may be serviced in any battery facility, including nickel-cadmium service facilities, without danger of cross contamination.

Concorde designs and manufactures over 90 models of Original Equipment and direct replacement batteries for fixed wing and rotary aircraft. Concorde batteries are installed as Original Equipment by the majority of aircraft manufacturers and adopted by military aircraft operators worldwide.

7-20-15 Extend Battery Life using Updates to the Concorde Battery Component Maintenance Manual for RG® Series Main Aircraft Battery

West Covina, CA - Concorde is committed to first class customer support and focuses efforts on current product improvement as well as new product development. Part of this effort is evaluating maintenance procedures for clarity to ensure customer safety for optimal product performance and in turn extending battery life, improving customer experience and minimizing end user inconvenience.

Concorde's newly released CMM (24-30-71), Document No. 5-0171 Revision N, dated March 31, 2015, provides clarification of the Conditioning Charge Procedure used to recover sulfated batteries as evidenced by way of a failed Capacity Test. Previous revisions of CMM 5-0171 have recommended that either a 31 volt or 16 hour condition charge procedure may be used to recover a sulfated battery. The option was left to the mechanic. After years of battery recovery analysis, Concorde's engineers have found that the 31 volt Condition Charge is the most successful charge procedure prescribed for recovering deeply discharged batteries. A deeply discharged battery is described as a battery with an open circuit voltage of 20 volts or less for a 24 volt battery (10 volts or less for a 12 volt battery). Alternatively, the 16 hour Condition Charge Procedure is the best Condition Charge program for recovering batteries that are not considered deeply discharged (OCV above 20 volts for a 24 volt battery and above 10 volts for a 12 volt battery).

Revision "N" also includes a Battery Maintenance Log, added to the back of the manual where the battery's annual capacity test results may be logged. To download the latest version of Concorde's Component Maintenance Manuals please visit: www.concordebattery.com/main_air_tech.php.

8-1-14 AC & DC Powered Heated Concorde RG® Series Batteries Optimizing Performance and Convenience for Cold Weather Operators

West Covina, CA - Cold temperatures increase the internal resistance which decreases a battery’s capacity and slows the battery’s ability to accept charge current. For years operators in cold climates have made it a practice to endure the inconvenience of removing batteries from aircraft, transporting and storing them in a heated environment, then reinstalling prior to departure. Some also use external heater blankets that wrap around the battery and heat the outermost cells when the aircraft is parked. Although this solution increases capacity, in some cases the battery cells are not equally heated resulting in diminished capacity and disproportionate recharge across battery cells.

In order to maximize battery performance, Concorde has developed heated batteries in our most popular sizes to mitigate these problems. Concorde’s RG-380E/44, RG-380E/60 and RG-390E series of heated batteries incorporate internal AC (115 V nominal) and DC (28 V nominal) heater blankets that surround cells in the most optimal manor for equalizing cell heating. These blankets are controlled by a Heater Control Unit (HCU) offered in four different TSO authorized varieties. HCU-1 is a DC only unit and uses DC power supply to operate the heaters. HCU-2 is an AC only unit that heats the battery using AC power. HCU-3 and HCU-4 are dual power units that allow for either AC or DC power supply. HCU-3 accommodates AC or DC power supplied through a single receptacle whereas HCU-4 has separate receptacles for AC and DC power. Each HCU controls battery temperature with thermal switches that automatically turn on or off depending on the temperature of the battery. Redundant switches are in place to prevent the possibility of overheating.

RG380E 60LHSome airframe manufacturers have already incorporated this design into their aircraft to provide end users with optimal performance and zero inconvenience.

Heated batteries are TSO authorized and available in the following part numbers: RG-380E/44KH, RG-380E/44KSH, RG-380E/44LH, RG-380E/44LSH, RG-380E/60KH, RG-380E/60KSH, RG-380E/60LH, RG-380E/60LSH, RG-390E/KH, RG-390E/KSH, RG-390E/LH and RG-390E/LSH.

7-30-14 Aircraft Battery Capacity Test Adjustment – Concorde Battery Tech Bulletin No. 14

West Covina, CA - Concorde Battery Corporation`s Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) 5-0171 states that Capacity Check intervals are general recommendations suitable for most applications. The intervals may be adjusted for a specific aircraft or fleet once the average battery life is established. How does one establish the average battery life?

Concorde has released Technical Bulletin No. 14 - “Capacity Check Interval Adjustment” available at www.concordebattery.com. This bulletin gives guidance on how to establish average battery life and adjust capacity test intervals in accordance with that life. Capacity tests are the only accurate means of quantifying a battery`s state of health and verifying airworthiness. A battery capacity of 80% or more is considered airworthy by the FAA and is required in order to supply essential power in the event of an alternator or generator failure. Aircraft that are flown under the same environmental conditions, follow the same operating patterns and are configured with the same electrical systems can extend their capacity test intervals based on previous battery life.

This Technical Bulletin walks you through proper methodology for accurately adjusting the capacity check schedule. A full copy of the Technical Bulletin is available at: http://www.concordebattery.com/otherpdf/TB14.pdf

7-29-14 Concorde Battery Higher Power RG-380E/46 Series Batteries Receive TSO Approval: Drop in replacement for RG-380E/44 Series

West Covina, CA - Concorde Battery Higher Power RG-380E/46 Series Batteries Receive TSO Approval:
Drop in replacement for RG-380E/44 Series

RG 380E 46AConcorde Battery Corporation announces TSO approval of the RG-380E/46 battery series. The RG-380E/46 series batteries have more power at the same weight and in the same dimensions as the popular RG® Series RG-380E/44 batteries. Concorde is continuously working on developing longer lasting and more powerful Sealed Lead Acid Batteries and through Research and Development produced a battery the same size and weight as the RG-380E/44 with higher capacity and more instantaneous power. This direct replacement supplies 10% more power at 46 Ah than the 42 Ah RG-380E/44. When used in the same application, the RG-380E/46 will last longer (due to a lower depth of discharge on engine start), cause less engine wear (due to more cranking power), and provide more essential power in the event of an alternator failure allowing more time to safely land the aircraft. Obtaining TSO approval was the first step toward updating STCs that incorporate the RG-380E/44 to include this higher power solution. Revised STCs for the superior RG-380E/46 battery should be available in the near future.

8-21-13 EASA ESTC for Single & Dual Lead Acid Battery Installation onEurocopter AS350 B, BA, B1, B2 & B3

West Covina, CA - Concorde is pleased to announce that Airlift AS of Norway has received EASA approval for ESTC 10044362 allowing for single and dual battery installations of Concorde’s Sealed Lead Acid RG-350 or RG-355 battery on Eurocopter AS350B, -BA, -B1, -B2 and B3 models. The ESTC is now available through Concorde Battery Corporation’s
worldwide network of distributors.

RG 350AsMany cold weather and high cyclic operators have requested a Lead Acid option for use in Europe and Airlift has fulfilled this request with Concorde batteries. For conversions on a single battery installation ESTC 10044362 replaces the main 15 Ah nickel-cadmium battery with either the Concorde RG-350 or the RG-355 17 Ah Lead Acid batteries. If the aircraft has been modified with Eurocopter Service Bulletin 24.00.01 (starting in very cold weather) Airlift’s ESTC allows for the replacement of both Nickel-Cadmium batteries with Concorde RG-350 batteries.

RG-350 and RG-355 are TSO authorized and as such, have passed rigorous TSO C-173 testing for duty cycle, electrical performance, temperature extremes, shock/vibration and environmental requirements. Concorde’s valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) recombinant gas (RG®) absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology has been proven as reliable, durable and safe for over 30 years. Superior performance can be attributed to unique design features such as proprietary PolyGuard® separators (an additional layer of protection against shorting, unique to Concorde) robust plate construction, over the cell wall intercell connections for reduced internal resistance and a commitment to quality standards.

The advantages of converting from nickel-cadmium to Concorde’s RG® Series batteries include lower cost of acquisition, zero maintenance and reduced battery costs per flight hour. Concorde batteries do not require deep cycling to remove the “memory effects” seen in nickel-cadmium batteries, do not require water or electrolyte replenishment and have no risk of thermal runaway. With the benefit of RG® Series batteries shipping Hazmat Exempt, transportation is more cost effective regardless of whether shipping by land, sea or air.

RG 355AsAirlift AS, based at Forde Airport in Bygstad, Norway, is the largest North European domestic helicopter company and the sole Norwegian government contractor for search and rescue. The company is part of the Blueway Group and operates 16 of the group’s helicopters.

In addition to performing design and maintenance on its own helicopters, Airlift has also offered design, installation and maintenance services to other helicopter companies for over 20 years. Airlift AS is holder of an EASA Part 21 Subpart J approval as Design Organization (DOA). This includes approval of design changes related to avionics, electrical and interiors as well as changes and minor repairs related to aircraft structure.

8-1-13 Concorde RG-224 Excels in High Cyclic Helicopter Operations

WEST COVINA, CA Concorde designed the RG-224, 24 Ah, RG® Series (recombinant gas) helicopter battery to fulfill a demand for a higher capacity battery on the Bell LongRanger and has received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. Numerous LongRanger operators have converted to the RG-224, using Falcon Crest’s STC SR09069RC, to reduce engine wear and increase battery life.

High cyclic operations are hard on aircraft batteries due to frequent starts with short flight times. This style of operation shortens battery life because there is not enough time in flight for the battery to fully recharge. The two consequences of a partial charge are decreased capacity and shortened battery life.

When a battery is not fully recharged sulfate builds on battery plates. The sections of the plates covered with sulphate are inactive and the battery is unable to provide full cranking capacity on the next demanding start cycle. This decrease in capacity causes unnecessary wear on engine components. Air Ambulance and Oil & Gas fleets experience some of the highest cyclic operations. These operators have responded with surprise at the increased starting power and improved performance experienced after upgrading to the RG-224 packed with 42% more power than RG-222.

Aircraft batteries can be damaged beyond repair when they are discharged below 80% of their capacity. In high cyclic operations the capacity is slightly drained a little more on each start because a full charge is never achieved during a short flight. The higher capacity RG-224 provides more room for discharge before a full charge is required thereby extending battery life.

To extend your battery life and prevent unnecessary wear upgrade to Concorde’s RG-224 in your LongRanger using Falcon Crest STC SR09069RC.
